Converting A BMR In kJ To Calories

Many smart scales, body-composition analysers and fitness apps report your basal metabolic rate (BMR) in kilojoules. To convert it to Calories, divide by 4.184:

BMR (kcal/day) = BMR (kJ/day) ÷ 4.184

For example, a scale showing BMR 6,500 kJ means about 1,554 Calories a day. Type your own number into the converter above.

What BMR Means

BMR is the energy your body needs at complete rest: to breathe, pump blood, keep warm, run your brain and repair tissue. For most people it’s 60-70% of total daily energy use. It is not how much you should eat: your total needs also include digesting food and all your movement.

To estimate what you burn in a typical day, BMR is multiplied by an activity factor (about 1.2 for sedentary up to 1.9 for very active). That gives your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE).

Calculate Your BMR In kJ And Calories

Don’t have a BMR from a device? Estimate it with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation below, or let the daily kJ calculator do it for you: it shows your BMR next to your maintenance intake, in both kJ and Calories.

Men: BMR (kcal) = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5

Women: BMR (kcal) = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

Multiply by 4.184 for kJ.

Why Your Scale’s BMR May Differ

Smart scales estimate body fat using bioelectrical impedance, then feed that into their own BMR formula. Results can move by several hundred kJ from day to day with hydration, time of day and recent exercise. Treat the number as a trend, not an exact measurement, and compare readings taken at the same time of day.

FAQ

How do I convert BMR from kJ to Calories?

Divide the kJ figure by 4.184. A BMR of 7,000 kJ is about 1,673 Calories a day.

What is a normal BMR in kJ?

Most adults have a BMR between about 5,000 and 8,500 kJ a day (roughly 1,200-2,000 Calories), depending on size, age, sex and muscle mass.

Should I eat my BMR in Calories?

Usually not, BMR is only your resting energy. Your total needs are higher once daily activity is included.

Is BMR the same as RMR?

They’re very close. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is measured under slightly less strict conditions and is usually a little higher than BMR.
