Active kJ to Calories Burned
If your watch or treadmill says you burned 1,200 kJ, that’s 287 Calories. To convert any exercise reading, divide the kilojoules by 4.184: the same factor used for food.

Active Energy Vs Total Energy
Devices usually show one or both of these:
| Reading | What it includes | Example: 45-minute jog, 70 kg |
|---|---|---|
| Active energy (active kJ) | Only the extra energy used by moving | ≈ 1,680 kJ (402 kcal) |
| Total energy | Active energy plus the resting energy you’d have burned anyway | ≈ 1,910 kJ (458 kcal) |
Active is the better number to compare with food if you’re deciding whether to eat a little more on training days, because resting energy is already part of your normal daily needs.
Converting Common Exercise Readings
| Active kJ | Calories burned | Roughly equal to |
|---|---|---|
| 400 kJ | 96 kcal | a medium apple |
| 800 kJ | 191 kcal | a regular latte |
| 1,200 kJ | 287 kcal | a slice of pepperoni pizza |
| 2,000 kJ | 478 kcal | a sandwich and a juice |
| 3,000 kJ | 717 kcal | a cheeseburger meal |
Cycling kJ Are Different
On a bike, a power meter measures mechanical work in kJ, the energy that actually reaches the pedals. Because your body is only about 20-25% efficient, the food energy used is roughly four times higher. Handily, that means 1 kJ of work ≈ 1 Calorie burned. So a ride showing 800 kJ of work burned about 800 Calories, not 191. Read cycling kJ vs Calories for the full explanation.
How Accurate Are Device Readings?
- Watches estimate from heart rate, movement and your profile; errors of 10-30% are common, especially for strength training.
- Gym machines often assume a default body weight unless you enter yours.
- Power meters are the most accurate for cycling because they measure work directly.
Use readings to compare sessions, not to “earn” an exact amount of food. For estimates at your own weight and 25 activities, use the exercise kJ calculator.

FAQ
How do I convert kJ burned to Calories?
Divide by 4.184. For example, 1,500 kJ burned ÷ 4.184 = 358.5 Calories.
Is active kJ the same as total kJ?
No. Active kJ is only the extra energy from moving; total kJ adds your resting energy for the same time.
Why does my bike say 1,000 kJ but my watch says 1,000 Calories?
The bike measures mechanical work; the watch estimates food energy. Because muscles are about 24% efficient, 1 kJ of work costs about 1 Calorie, so both can be right.
How many Calories is 2,000 active kJ?
2,000 ÷ 4.184 = 478 Calories.
